My name is Carlos; I am a 24 year old third year law student. I caught the travel bug when I was 20 years old and sailed around the world on the MV Explorer from Jan. 2008 to May 2008. It was the most amazing experience of my life. I learned a lot about myself along the journey, I don't know if I would have the passion for travel I do now if it was not for that experience. Ever since I can’t get enough, going so many places I would've never even dreamed just a few years ago when I was complacently trapped in my American bubble. In what is presumably my last summer of freedom before I become imprisoned by corporate America, I am embarking on a journey through South America. Mostly to become fluent in a language I should’ve been taught a long time ago as a child being half Puerto Rican, but also to see, learn, explore and grow in a way only possible through travel.

Driving Up The Coast Of Chile

Santiago to Calama is a 24 hour bus ride, then you have to take a 2 hour bus to San Pedro de Atacama from Calama.  I brought a cheap bottle of wine on the bus and asked for a cup.  They tried to say it was $12 for me to drink wine, I just played the dumb American card and pretended I had no idea what they were saying and they left me alone.  My seat was next to the bathroom, which anyone understands is annoying and disgusting.  Luckily my allergies were acting up a bit so I couldn’t smell the best.    For about 12 hours of my bus journey I was stuck sitting next to this Chilean man who should’ve been forced to buy two seats as his body was coming over into my area and there is not that much space already.  Chilean buses are nothing like Colombia’s, Uruguay’s or Argentina’s.  They are older and way less comfortable.  I will never book with Pullman again; Turbus is the company to use.
